* 1946 - The Indian farmers were totally frustrated with the corrupt and unfair practices of the middlemen milk traders.
* The Birth of "AMUL"
The farmers of Kaira approached Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who suggested forming a co-operative and selling milk directly to the Bombay Milk Scheme. And so, the brand Amul was launched in "1946".
* Amul's Goal!
Amul is not an Ltd. company; it's a cooperative society whose main goal is the upliftment of Indian farmers. Till now, it has given financial independence to the farmers of 13000+ villages of Gujarat..
* The Shareholders!
Amul's shareholders are the 3.6 million "farmers" who provide milk and all the other dairy support to the company. Every one rupee that AMUL makes, it pays 80 paise back to its farmers.
* IPO was never Amul's Objective!
Going IPO would mean diluting (or reducing) the shares of millions of farmers, which will hurt their sentiments. Amul already makes enough money from these shareholders, so why go for an IPO!
